Too many times we’ve seen people lose their sentimental photos and videos because they weren’t properly backed up. If your camera or phone gets broken or you accidentally delete any of your files without backing them up elsewhere, they’re gone forever. To prevent this from happening to you, we recommend backing your files up often. Don’t know how to back your files up? Keep reading and we’ll walk you through some of the basics to get you started!
First, were your files recorded directly to your camera or phone’s internal memory or were they saved onto a memory card? If they were recorded onto a memory card, you’ll need to remove the card from your device and connect it to a computer. Most modern computers have built-in SD card readers, but for more specific types of memory cards, you may need to use some kind of external card reader to connect it to your computer.
If your files were saved onto your phone or camera’s internal memory, you’ll have to connect the device directly to your machine. Most phones are charged these days via a USB cable, so often you can use the cable you charge your phone with to connect it to the computer, and cameras are almost always sold with a USB cable in order to transfer files to your computer.
Once you have either your phone, camera, or memory card connected to your computer, navigate to the location of your files. Often times, the option to open a folder to view the files on your device will pop up as soon as you plug it into the computer. If not, it is fairly simple to find the location via your computer’s explorer system.
All that’s left to do before you can transfer your files to your computer is to define a location to move the files to. Create a new folder wherever you’d like the files to be on your computer, whether it’s in your documents folder, on the desktop, etc. Select all the files in the folder on your device, copy them, and paste them into the new folder you’ve created.
That’s all there is to it! In the best case scenario, we also suggest having a drive dedicated to backing up your files, as it’s always good to have your files backed up in more than one location. The process to back your files up to an external hard drive or flash drive is very similar to the process of backing files up to your computer. Just create a folder on your drive and copy the files to that folder as well.
